ITIL v4 book

ITSM and ITIL are well-known methodologies for IT infrastructure management that are often confused. To better understand the features of the systems, the principles and advantages of their application, you should familiarize yourself with ITIL 4 books.

What is ITSM

The functioning of a business is usually based on simple resource management - there is equipment of a certain type that produces a given amount of output per unit of time. Managers understand how much product needs to be produced to make a profit. The process is simple and transparent. In the case of IT infrastructure, this approach is not applicable. Let's say you need to restore the functioning of corporate mail systems. In some cases, the work will take five minutes, in others a few days. It is not easy to understand the reason for the time difference, it is necessary to analyze a large number of variables. ITSM finds answers to questions related to the functioning of the IT infrastructure, can qualitatively optimize organizational processes. In essence, such a system allows:

  • make the IT department a solution provider for other structural parts of the company;
  • formalize the services that the company wants to receive from the IT department;
  • break the IT infrastructure of the enterprise into separate services that automate certain business tasks;
  • create and implement information technologies;
  • develop and implement a suitable procedure;
  • train employees;
  • monitor the implemented systems.

As a result, all processes related to the information technology infrastructure are optimized, the company's work runs smoothly.

Service configuration management

Service configuration management practices collect information about the assets, technology, and people of an organization. The main goal is to maintain accountable records, assess risks, and form interdependencies.

ITIL 4 introduced value stream and product accounting into practice coverage.

New in ITIL 4:

  • value streams, services, divisions, people, roles, reports are configuration items;
  • products are also indirectly assigned to configuration items.

IT asset management

This practice is closely related to configuration management. However, the main goal of asset management is to optimize the cost of owning an asset and the cost of maintaining it.

ITIL 4 considers new types of assets - knowledge. The practice itself is no longer part of configuration management, but is singled out as an independent one.

New in ITIL 4:

  • knowledge can be an asset;
  • the main activities are identical to the practice of configuration management.
